Common Nose Cancer Tests

Nasal cavity and paranasal cancers are usually found because of signs or symptoms a person is having. If nasopharyngeal cancer (nose cancer) is suspected, tests will be done sometimes by specialists to confirm the diagnosis.

You should expect questions touching on your medical history, any problems you’ve been having, and possible risk factors such as where you work and what chemicals you work with. The doctor will at first examine you physically to look for signs of nasal cavity or paranasal sinus cancer and other health problems as well.

So, here is a list of possible nose cancer examinations that you should be aware of:

X-Ray

X-rays of the head area can show if there’s any fluid or masses in the sinuses. This is because the normal sinuses should be filled with air. If there’s any fluid, it suggests that something is wrong but it may not be a tumour. Most of the time, an abnormal looking sinus means there is an infection.

Sinus x-rays are not often done because doctors prefer to do a CT scan that gives more detailed picture. If you have been diagnosed with nasal cavity cancer, an x-ray of the chest might be needed to find out if the cancer has spread to your lungs.

Specialist Exam

If your doctor thinks that you might have a nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses, you’ll be sent to see an otolaryngologist. This is a doctor who specializes in diseases of the eye, ear, nose, and throat. The doctor will carefully check your nasal paths and the rest of your head and neck.

They might also test your nose, throat, tongue, and mouth areas which can be done with a headlamp and small mirrors. A small piece of tissue might be removed during the examination if an abnormal area is seen. People with nasopharyngeal cancer (nose cancer)are at greater risk of other cancers in the head and neck region. So, all areas will be looked carefully for any signs of cancer.

Rounding Up

There are other tests that may be done in people diagnosed with nasal cavity or paranasal sinus cancer. These tests are not used to diagnose the nasopharyngeal cancer (nose cancer) but they are done to see if a person is healthy enough for certain treatments like surgery or chemotherapy. Remember, it is very important to quit smoking before starting any treatment for nasal cavity or paranasal sinus cancer.
